![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I, like some other reviewers, found it on a list of YA novels to watch out for. In a story filled with ghosts and a girl born with wings, the item that prevented the suspension of my disbelief was the crappy historical sociology. The small bakeries that survived from the 1950s onward did so by replicating Americans' taste for cheap, chemical products during this era. Post war food industrialism killed neighborhood food artisans, one of which the protagonist's grandmother is supposed to be. In fact, I couldn't help but think in the back of my mind the whole time that the story was set in a time period that was death for American bakeries. Please don't describe another chocolate cake. Why was it set in a bakery? Why all the lengthy expositions on baked goods? Listen, I love a bakery as much as the next guy, but at points I felt like enough was enough. I found the whole bakery sub theme to be distracting and annoying. Still, it was a cool story with a few bad points in execution. So that colors my experience in a negative way. ![]() As for the book itself, well, I probably wouldn't have bought it if I had realized it was in the "Young Adult" genre. The plot of Advise and Consent revolves around a showdown between the president of the United States and the senior senator from South Carolina, the memorable Seabright Cooley. I have been an avid reader most of my life, which has given me a decent ear for good prose, and I always aimed to produce good work, but I also generally distinguished between the history on the one side and the writing on the other. This is not to say I paid no attention to the craft of writing before that point. I started getting serious about writing in the course of writing my dissertation. ![]() Many ideas fizzle, either because the writer can’t concentrate on them long enough to blow a spark into a flame, or because the idea itself doesn’t have the strength to become more than a hunch. ![]() Some hope that writing pyrotechnics might dazzle or sheer bulk equate to authority.Īn open secret: it’s OK to be scared by the responsibilities of writing and revising, at least sometimes. Titus and his friends are permanently bombarded with advertisements, promotions, and commercials-all of which are tailored to their specific needs and likes. The implantation of the Feed results in constant stimulus. Though the Feed offers roughly the same services as today’s modern computers, it exists as an implant, rather than a stationary box or network. The titular Feed dominates life in this futuristic world. This novel therefore serves as a tantalizing, sobering, and frightening reminder that we, as a society, do not stand too far apart from the dystopian futures we read about in books and watch on television. The rise of social media, advertising partnerships (the likes of which can be seen on Amazon and Facebook today), and environmental debates are at the forefront of national and worldwide conversations today. Though themes of environment, apathy, advertising, resistance, and consumerism are prevalent in Feed’s futuristic world, this novel reminds us that today’s society is not so different from the society depicted in M.T.
